School holidays are fun. I love my child. I love family time (while everyone is happy, of course).
Though, when I still have to do all other things, the day can be overwhelming. The feeling of guilt and stress from the things I haven't completed leads me to the negative cycle. More stress, less focus. Less focus, less productivity. Less productivity, more stress.
So today, I'd like to share 5 Tips To Make Your Day Productive.
1. Start The Day Early
If you usually get up when your family gets up, your day can be busy from the very beginning. Instead, start getting up earlier and make some time for yourself. You can read a book, check your plans for the day, or have your first coffee of the day.
Worry about your alarm may wake your family up? Well, sometimes, I actually sleep in another room just to make sure I can get up early without waking my family up.
2. Time Blocking
If your kids follow certain routines, or, if they're big enough to entertain themselves, this might be another option for you.
You decide the time slot to complete a task and ignore as many distractions as possible. For example, if you have to check through and reply emails, block whatever the time you desire (e.g. 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or an hour) and focus on emails.
When my child is with me, I schedule the time that I spend with him as well. I ask him to read a book, do some activities, etc. while I work on the task. He is usually happy to do so if I promise to play with him after and if I keep my words.
3. To-Do List
I believe a lot of you are doing this already but my tip is to add more information e.g. time, priority, order, and/or location. If you make the action plan more specific, it is way easier to execute. Then, keep it in a small notebook or in an app on your mobile so you can check the list anywhere anytime and stay on track.
4. No More Than 3 Goals
Setting too many goals makes you overwhelmed and make your day chaotic. If you start everything at the same time, you often finish nothing at the end of the day.
The tip here is to decide 1 - 3 main tasks that you actually complete on that day. Pick the most difficult task or the one you have kept avoiding until today. If you complete the most difficult task early in the day, you will feel easier for the rest of the day.
5. Make It A Reward
What makes you happy or calm during a busy day?
For me, it is the first coffee In the morning. I love my coffee and I need it before I start my work. So I made my coffee a reward that I can get only after my morning workout. I like doing my workout but that's the thing I skip when my to-do list is filled with all sorts of other things. We as mums tend to put ourselves lowest priority, right?

If you're interested in making better habits, I really recommend the book "Atomic Habits" by James Clear. I found a copy at a local library. If you prefer, you can start with his weekly newsletter here.
